STORAGE TIPS - STORING

Self Storage Tips
Our self-storage facilities carry a wide variety of moving and packing supplies in order to make your moving, packing and storage experience a smooth one. To view specific Storage and Packing tips, choose a topic below...

STORING - FURNITURE

- When storing love seats, sofas or wing chairs placed them to the end of the unit to save space. As with any upholstered furniture, protect them by placing a protective cover over them.
- If you really want to obtain the most out of your storage space, disassemble as much furniture as possible.
- A piece of old carpet, blanket or any sheeting material placed on the floor, will help protect your furniture.
- When storing assembled tables, place tabletops face down with the legs up. If storing more than one table, place one on top of the other, tabletops together.

STORING - BOOKS

- Do not put the boxes with books directly on the unit floor. Place boxes on skids or pallets in order to prevent moisture absorption.
- Do not place heavy boxes or heavy pieces of furniture on top of the boxes with books.
- If your goods are going to remain in storage for a long period of time, place the boxes with books at the front of the storage unit, so you may check them from time to time to make sure there is no moisture build-up.

STORING - APPLIANCES

- When storing a refrigerator or freezer, it should be stored clean and dry, leaving the door slightly ajar so that moisture does not build within.
- Refrigerators and large appliances make very good packing "spaces" for towels, blankets and tablecloths.
- Wipe a few drops of oil on tools and metal objects as a rust protector. To avoid staining, do not put next to exposed items.

STORING - CLOTHING

- Wardrobe boxes with a hanging bar, available at the showrooms in our facilities, will let you store your clothing in hangers, thus protecting the shape of the garment. A wardrobe box is only $10.00 at any location.
- Store the boxes with clothing close to the entrance, or in an accessible spot, so you may be able to retrieve any piece you might need at a given time.

STORING - MISCELANEOUS

- Shovels, hoes, rakes, and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans. Stack extra cans inside one another.
- Determining the right size of storage space is one of the most important decisions when choosing a storage space. A small space that is efficiently packed will cost less than a larger space, but if you are going to frequently use the space and move belongings in or out, a large space with racks and file boxes that will allow you inside mobility might be best.
- Before you visit or call a storage facility, pre-inventory your belongings. This will allow the storage consultant to give you the best estimate for the space you will need.
- What you may or may not be allowed to store should be kept in mind once you choose your storage space. Toxic materials, flammables, perishable goods, live animals, explosives or illegal items are some of the items that you will not be allowed to store.
- Label each box and keep a list of the labeled boxes. It will come in handy when trying to locate a needed item. When storing the boxes, arranged them so that the labels are facing out so you may be able to read them easily.
- Place smaller boxes on top of larger boxes.
- Mattresses will keep their shape longer and better and will not bend, if you place them upright on their side.
- Leave spaces to reach the back of the unit and put frequently used items near the front, in the order that you will need to access them.
- Heavy or sharp objects must be kept on the floor, never on top of upholstered furniture.
